The Advantages of Magneto-Rheological Finishing (MRF)

At United Lens Company, we are continuously committed to improving our capabilities to ensure everyone’s success. This means strengthening our capabilities by investing in the right equipment and continuing to drive efficiencies in every step of the manufacturing process.

Our newest capability includes Magneto-Rheological Finishing (MRF), a newer technology that involves polishing slurry being magnetically controlled in real time—the finished product meeting or exceeding specifications. Providing increased reliability of the process facilitates less variation in quality and shorter lead times. Our cutting edge machinery and investment in technologies allows our operators to provide you with components up to 18 inches in diameter, with additional fabrication capabilities that can provide surface flatness to 1/20 wave P-V @ 632.8nm, with parallelism < 1 arc second, and surface roughness quality that can be extremely low angstrom.

Requests by optics customers are more challenging today than ever. Shorter lead-times and higher quality are expected. Customers often times require smaller batches or a larger variety of more complicated geometries, and buyers are understandably less tolerant of variations in quality, missed deadlines and inconsistent pricing. New manufacturing capabilities are constantly required to be able to satisfy these new requirements, and that’s where the MRF can help.
